ECORD at EGU 2007

Almost 8,000 people attended the European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2007 (EGU 2007), at the Austria Centre Vienna, from April 15 to 20, 2007, one of the major geological conferences in Europe. ECORD co-organised the following events involving the European scientific drilling community:

:: ECORD-IODP Booth from April 16 to 20, 2007
:: Joint ICDP-IODP Townhall Meeting

:: ECORD Teachers' Workshop
:: IODP Media Activities.

:: The ECORD-IODP booth co-organised by ECORD (EMA, ESO and ESSAC), with the help of IODP and CDEX, was a focal point for people interested in the program.The booth featured a wide range of information including replica cores from the Arctic and Tahiti expeditions and the most recent publications related to the ECORD, IODP and CDEX activities . We are very thankful to all people who voluntereed in the booth, sharing their own experience and activity with the EGU participants.

:: Joint ICDP-IODP Townhall Meeting, Tuesday 17 April, 2007: IODP-ECORD and ICDP jointly convened some 150 people during this evening event. Uli Harms (ICDP) and Catherine Mével (ECORD) briefly presented the updated plans for future drilling operations, workshops and education activities.
To initiate discussions and exchanges between IODP and ICDP people, the speakers introduced some of the key people in the audience to convey more detailed information to the audience.

:: ECORD Teachers' Workshop, Wednesday 18 to Thursday 19 April: ECORD sponsored a 1-day Teacher Workshop "Exploring the ocean floor with the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program" during the 2007 EGU meeting in Vienna. Seventy teachers from 22 different countries registered for the ECORD Teachers' workshop, which was organised in partnership with the annual EGU Geophysical Information For Teachers (GIFT) symposium.

:: Scientific sessions on IODP science: Numerous lectures and posters have presented many results from IODP expeditions, in particular:

  • Marine and terrestrial paleoclimate records - recent advances in IODP and ICDP,
  • Microbial carbonates,
  • Tracing hydrothermal circulation at mid-ocean ridges using geochemistry, geophysics and modelling,
  • Downhole instrumentation: technology and applications.

:: IODP media activities during EGU 2007: IODP-related information was distributed to the media in different ways.
  • In the media centre a press conference about planned drilling projects in seismogenic zones offshore Japan and Costa Rica was held. This story was picked up by the BBC`s Interactive science pages which are visited by ~ 500,000 individuals daily, and has – according to the EGU press officer - been cited worldwide in other media.
  • Another press conference entitled “Lessons from the deep – recent advances in climate history” presented new insights from the Arctic Coring Expedition (ACEX) and from the Walvis Ridge Operations. This media conference was held together with colleagues working within ICDP.
  • Two so-called 'Media Tips' on ECORD expeditions were published on the EGU media website. They covered the Tahiti Sea-Level Expedition and the upcoming New Jersey Shallow Shelf Expedition.
  • IODP scientists, Ursula Röhl (Bremen Core Repository) and Jochen Erbacher (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften, Hannover), were interviewed about the PETM event by a science writer of the important German news magazine “Der Spiegel”; the reporter also visited the Bremen Core Repository.
