More than 9,000 scientists from all over the world attended the European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2009 in Vienna, Austria, from April 19 to 24, 2009. For the fifth consecutive year, ECORD presented IODP at the EGU in the Austria Vienna Centre and organised the following events with a strong support of IODP partners (IODP-MI, CDEX/JAMSTEC, J-DESC, IODP-USIO) and ICDP.

A brief update on IODP and ICDP plans was presented and the Townhall meeting was also the opportunity for all scientists to express their needs and to discuss future directions in scientific drilling.

In preparation of the IODP New Ventures in Exploring Scientific Targets (INVEST) Conference, ECORD organised a Pre-INVEST Workshop to discuss the future directions of scientific ocean drilling and to outline ECORD's vision of the scientific drilling beyond 2013. This 2-day workshop includes break-out group and discussions open to all scientists with an interest in scientific drilling.

    Convenors: U. Roehl, H. Brinkhuis, D. Hodell and B. Ildefonse
    The principal goals of the joint IODP-ICDP session are to summarise and review major scientific achievements in ocean and continental drilling with special emphasis on the European contributions to IODP and ICDP. The session will include presentations and discussions of results and new perspectives on scheduled drilling projects using a multi-platform approach.
