From Sunday, April 22 to Friday, April 27, 2012, ECORD/IODP and ICDP have jointly presented ocean and continental research drilling at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2012 in Vienna, Austria.
The conference was again a large success with 11,275 participants (28% students) from 95 countries.

The booth is a focal point for the scientific drilling community, scientists from other fields of research and from non-IODP countries, to catch the most recent informations from both scientific programmes. Lively demonstrations with real cores were organised by ICDP as well as online presentations to access IODP, ODP and DSDP data via SEDIS.

IODP-ICDP Townhall Meeting

Understanding climate, sea-level and environmental changes, geohazards, natural resources and the structure and evolution of the Earth's crust and the nature and extent of the deep biosphere all require having acces to information recorded in sub-surface layers. Two major and complementary international programmes undertake drilling for the scientific community: IODP and ICDP, in oceanic and continental environments respectiveley.
This Townhall meeting was the opportunity to share our views on exciting challenges to take up for a better understanding of the Earth system and its changing environment. The new framework of the future International Ocean Discovery (IODP) post 2013, was also presented.

The principal goals of this session are to summarise and review major scientific achievements in ocean and continental drilling with special emphasis on the European contributions to IODP and ICDP. Futhermore, perspectives and visions for drilling projects using a multi-platform approach were tackled.
