ECORD Council #3 - Summary / Bremen, 17 March 2004


All ECORD member countries were represented and at the previous day an important milestone was achieved with the signature of the IODP membership agreement with the US and Japan. Spain was welcomed as official 13th ECORD member. Austria was welcomed and expressed their intention to soon join ECORD. Canada will make a final decision by the end of March.

EMA reported the issue of the second ECORD Newsletter and the redesign of the website. The web site now offers a European portal to all IODP and ECORD information. Also progress has been made on a coordinated PR and outreach policy. Council decided to publish a summary of their meetings on the website.

ESO reported on progress with planning of MSP operations, specifically the Arctic. On June 3 a press event is planned in London. For Tahiti-Great Barrier reef the SPC will have to decide whether this can be split into two legs 2005 and 2006. For New Jersey shelf discussions are ongoing to cooperate with ICDP.

ESSAC could report on progress with nominations for SAS panels and staffing. For the Arctic and Juan de Fuca expeditions, scientists have been invited. For non-riser legs in 2005, applications are still open till 16th April. Also Valentina Zampetti was introduced as the ESSAC science coordinator, she will start 1st May.
End of March IODP-MI will meet in Sapporo and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam submitted a letter of intent for IODP-MI membership. Other European institutes will soon follow.

ECORD is entitled to two members of the Board of Governors, ECORD Council discussed nomination of possible candidates. ECORD Council approved nomination of Mike Bickle for membership of SPPOC which will be submitted to IODP-MI (note ECORD has 4 seats, other members previously nominated are Xavier le Pichon, Hermann Kudrass and Judith McKenzie).
For the ERA-Net, a meeting will be organised at Eurocean 2004 in Galway. A possible EUROCORES on site-surveys will be further considered.
Council approved nomination of Soeren Duerr as new Vice chair as of
April 1 when John Ludden takes over Chair from Raymond Schorno.
