ECORD MagellanPlus Workshop

9 11 October 2023, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK

DRILLING THE SE-ASIAN SUNDA SHELF: Plio-Pleistocene climate, sea level, carbon storage and continental weathering on the largest low latitude shelf system

Workshop aim
The Sunda Shelf in SE Asia has long been identified as a strategic and high-quality target region for scientific drilling using MSP techniques. Two strong MSP proposals have been developed (IODP 1005 and IODP 1007) providing a rare opportunity to optimise synergies between both initiatives and develop conceptual strategies for a land-to-sea perspective. The proposed workshop will facilitate this advanced discussion and aims to result in a joined-up MSP-based science perspective.
Location and importance of Early Career Researchers
Our workshop will take place over 2.5 days in the Lyell Centre on the Heriot-Watt University campus in Edinburgh. For location and local transport to/from the city centre and the airport see:
https://www.hw.ac.uk/uk/edinburgh/maps-directions.htm;

We aim to build a lasting and vibrant research community that serve as a platform for developing strong MSP-based proposals for the Sunda Shelf region, driving the transition to the next phase of IODP-ICDP scientific ocean drilling. The MagellanPlus workshop will provide a focal point to facilitate this discussion, with contributions from two mature proposals (IODP 1005 and IODP 1007), and new opportunities emerging.

We aim to closely align with ECORD’s objective of extending the original MSP concept into all drilling environments, including potentially land based (ICDP) drilling to develop the potential of the IODP 2050 Science Framework. This decadal outlook must involve active participation of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) right from the beginning of strategic planning and writing as they will be essential to future successes. With this spirit, we aim to attract a significant number of ECR attendees to attend the workshop.

Application
Interested applicants should fill out the registration form link by 31 July 2023. We will continue offering vacant places after this deadline, based on individual requests.

We are seeking a diverse group of researchers to attend this workshop, with expertise in a wide range of disciplines relevant to scientific drilling of the Sunda Shelf region. We strongly encourage applications from ECRs.

ECORD have provided a limited amount of funding to support applicants from ECORD member nations to attend this workshop, covering expenditure to run the workshop at the HWU campus, including icebreaker, daily catering and two workshop dinner in the city centre.

All senior academics invited to the workshop will have to cover their own costs of travel, accommodation, and subsistence outside of the workshop.

Limited funds are available to support part of the cost of travel for ECR attendees (based on individual request).
